What Is PU Leather? A Plain-English Guide for Woven Bags

Woven PU leather bag on a warm neutral background — What Is PU Leather? material guide | Woven Rove

A PU leather bag is made from synthetic leather with a polyurethane (PU) coating, not from animal hide. If a brand calls a bag "vegan leather," PU is almost always what they mean. This guide explains what PU leather actually is, how it behaves in a woven bag, how it differs from real cowhide, and how to look after it.

What PU leather actually is

"PU" stands for polyurethane. PU leather is a fabric or fibre backing — usually polyester or cotton — coated with a layer of polyurethane, then embossed with a grain or texture pattern. It looks and flexes like leather, but it contains no animal hide.

Two parts are worth separating:

  • The coating gives PU its leather-like surface, its depth of colour and its wipe-clean finish.
  • The backing gives it structure and strength. A denser backing holds a shape better; a thin backing feels flimsier in the hand.

Because both parts are manufactured, PU can be produced in consistent colours and finishes that are hard to match in natural hide — which is why deep, saturated colours are common in PU bags.

What "vegan leather" really means

"Vegan leather" is a marketing umbrella term, not a material. A bag qualifies as vegan leather only if no animal-derived material was used — but the actual substance behind the label can be polyurethane (PU), a PU-and-fabric blend, or another synthetic. When a product page says "vegan leather," the useful question is always: what is it made of? On our own product pages that answer is stated plainly — our woven bags list "Material: Polyurethane (PU), not genuine leather."

How PU becomes a woven bag

In a woven PU bag, the coated material is cut into narrow strips and interlaced rather than used as flat panels. The weave does three things: it spreads load across hundreds of strip intersections instead of a few seams, it gives the surface depth and shadow that flat PU cannot reproduce, and it lets a lightweight material hold a structured silhouette.

PU leather vs genuine cowhide vs microfiber

All three appear in woven bags, and the differences are practical rather than moral — each has a job.

PU (vegan) leather Genuine cowhide Microfiber
What it is Polyurethane coating on a fabric backing Real animal hide, split into grain and lower layers Fine synthetic fibres, often woven into an open lattice
Feel Even and smooth, holds deep colour Grainy, warms with use, develops patina Soft and light, slightly matte
Water and rain Wipes clean; handles light rain best Needs drying if wet; dislikes prolonged damp Quick-drying; reshapes while damp
Long term Can crack or peel where it flexes repeatedly over years Can be conditioned and repaired; ages rather than peels Durable for its weight; less structure
Weight Light to medium Heaviest Lightest
Typical price Entry to mid Premium Mid

If your priority is a bag you can wipe down, carry in light rain and rotate daily without much thought, PU is the practical choice. If you want a bag that ages, can be conditioned and is built to be kept, woven genuine cowhide is the upgrade — it is also the heaviest and the most expensive. For the lightest option, see the open-lattice Lattice Woven Microfiber Tote. To compare all four woven materials side by side, read Woven Bags: 4 Materials Compared.

Is PU leather durable?

For everyday use, yes — with one honest limit. PU does not tear or fray the way a woven natural fibre can, and a woven construction reinforces it further by sharing load across the weave. But PU is a coating, and a coating can eventually crack or peel where it flexes again and again — most often along a strap edge or a fold — and heat and prolonged sun speed that up. It is not a material you can condition or repair the way you can real leather.

Treat a woven PU bag as a well-made everyday bag rather than a lifetime purchase: with normal rotation and the care below it holds up well; left in a hot car or worn daily in extreme sun, it will show its age sooner. That is the general behaviour of coated synthetics, not a laboratory result.

PU leather and water

This is where PU is easiest to live with. Rain beads on the surface, spills wipe away with a damp cloth, and the bag does not soak the way untreated leather or straw does. A covered opening helps on a wet commute — the Box Woven-Texture PU Handbag closes with a zip, and the Everyday Woven PU Carryall uses a magnetic top. If the bag does get soaked, blot it and let it air-dry rather than leaving it wet.

How to care for a woven PU bag

  1. Wipe, do not scrub. A soft cloth wrung out until barely damp, with a drop of mild soap for marks, worked gently along the weave.
  2. Keep it dry. No soaking and no machine washing; blot and air-dry if it gets wet.
  3. Avoid prolonged sun and heat. This is the single biggest cause of cracking and peeling in coated materials.
  4. Store it filled, in a dust bag. Stuffing the bag holds the woven shape; a dust bag keeps dust out of the weave.

That matches the care line printed on every woven PU product page — the material's real requirement, not boilerplate.

How to tell PU from real leather

  • Read the label first. A truthful page says "polyurethane" or "PU" if that is what it is. "Vegan leather" alone is not a material.
  • Look at the edge. Real hide shows a layered cross-section; PU shows a fabric backing under the coating.
  • Check the grain. Real grain is irregular; PU grain repeats in a pattern.
  • Press it. Leather creases and slowly springs back; PU tends to hold the crease more sharply.

Frequently asked questions

Is PU leather real leather?

No. PU leather is synthetic — a polyurethane coating on a fabric backing — and contains no animal hide. "Genuine leather" and "PU leather" describe different materials.

Is vegan leather the same as PU leather?

Usually, but not always. "Vegan leather" only tells you that no animal-derived material was used; the actual material is most often PU, but it can be another synthetic. Check the material line on the product page.

Does PU leather peel?

It can. Because PU is a coating, repeated flexing, heat and prolonged sun can eventually cause cracking or peeling, especially at strap edges and folds. Wiping it down, rotating it and keeping it out of heat and direct sun slows this down. It cannot be conditioned or repaired like real leather.

Is PU leather waterproof?

It resists water rather than being fully waterproof: rain and spills wipe off the surface, but water can still enter through stitching and open tops. Dry the bag after it gets wet.

Is PU leather better than real leather?

Neither is universally better. PU is lighter, less expensive, animal-free and easy to wipe clean; real cowhide is heavier and pricier but can be conditioned, repaired and aged. Choose by how you carry and how long you expect to keep the bag.
